Our founder and Director, Dr. Kathleen Collins, is a scholar of literacy education and disability studies (Ph.D., University of Michigan). Her research investigates patterns of educational inequity, particularly how perceived, assumed, or assigned differences may position students unfavorably. Kathleen calls this process "ability profiling" and helps teachers and schools design inclusive instruction that actively re-positions students for success.

The Literacies & Disability Justice Project exists to translate research on literacies and disability into ethical, usable educational practice. We support educators, school systems, families, and organizations in making informed decisions that honor disabled and multiply-marginalized learners, respect professional judgment, and resist deficit-based and compliance-driven approaches.

The goal of this work is not to provide programs or prescriptions, but to support clarity, alignment, and principled decision-making across educational contexts.
